From Ink Into Signs: A Two-Phase Shakespeare Workshop and Performance

Led by Nadia Nadarajah

We are excited to announce a restructured opportunity that will take place in two phases for Deaf mid-career and professional artists. This project combines Shakespeare training and a professional performance to create a comprehensive and rewarding experience.

Phase 1: Shakespeare Training Intensive

  • Dates: September 15 - 26, 2025

  • Location: Inside Out Theatre Studio, Calgary, Alberta

During this two-week intensive, participants will receive in-depth Shakespeare training with renowned Deaf artist Nadia Nadarajah. The focus will be on sign language interpretation and expression in Shakespearean works, helping artists hone their skills in text-based performance with a strong emphasis on visual storytelling.

Successful completion of Phase 1 will make participants eligible to be considered for Phase 2.

Phase 2: Professional Production and Performance

  • Dates: November 3 - 23, 2025

  • Location: Inside Out Theatre

Participants invited to join Phase 2 will collaborate on a professional production of the Shakespearean work explored during the training intensive. Artists will be paid professionally for their participation in this three-week performance phase. This phase allows participants to apply the skills learned in Phase 1 in a fully realized performance.

How To Apply:

Submit your application by January 1, 2025, for this extraordinary opportunity. The $1,500 honorarium subsidy is available to Canadian artists for Phase 1. International artists are welcome to apply but must participate at their own expense for Phase 1. Artists selected for Phase 2 will receive professional payment for the performance period.

Notice of acceptance for Phase 1 will be provided by March 1, 2025.

Grant writing assistance is available to help applicants with funding for travel or professional development grants.

This structure allows artists to participate in an intensive training process before moving into professional production, allowing them to build their skills and gain professional experience.
