The Good Host Program
What makes for a good host? We believe it's about being welcoming, anticipating your guests' needs, and simply wanting everyone to enjoy themselves.
With Inside Out Theatre's Good Host Program, we aim to enhance the theatre-going experience by facilitating accessible performances such as ASL Interpreted nights, Audio Described plays, and Relaxed Performances.
By partnering with fellow Calgary theatre companies, we offer a year-round accessible season for all ages. From family theatre to contemporary dramas, comedies, mysteries, and musicals, Calgary's leading theatre companies and most adventurous indie producers want to welcome you into the theatre.
For Our Audiences
Relaxed Performances
Relaxed performances are designed to welcome audience members who benefit from a more relaxed environment, including those with sensory concerns, autism spectrum disorders, learning disorders, dementia, parents with small babies, or anyone for whom a regular theatre experience can be challenging.
We make small modifications to reduce anxiety and ensure everyone feel comfortable.
Touch Tours & Audio Description
For blind or visually impaired audience members, we provide pre-show Touch Tours and Audio Described Performances. During a Touch Tour, one of our hosts guides audience members in a tactile exploration of the theatre, including the set, props, and costumes. Audience members will also be introduced to the actors with hosts to answer any questions.
During the show, an actor describes the visual elements of the performance in real-time through headphones.
ASL Interpreted Performance
For Deaf, Deafened, and Hard of Hearing audiences, we provide ASL interpreted performances. During these shows, qualified ASL interpreters translate the dialogue, music, and sound effects into American Sign Language in real-time, ensuring that all elements of the performance are accessible.
We also provide English to ASL translation for promotional materials.
